NOTES: Psychoanalysis is based on observation that individuals are often unaware of many of the factors that determine their emotions and behavior. Doctor Nicholls is delving into Charles’ mind to find the whereabouts of a missing girl. As the story unfolds we learn that as a child Charles had an imaginary friend named Alice and the two of them used to escape to Wonderland whenever his Nanny would sexually assault him. One day Alice left Charles behind and he finally understood what was actually happening to him. Never again was he able to escape to Wonderland, until one day on the beach, Charles meets a young girl in a familiar blue dress.
[ ALICE ]
Female. 10-16 yrs old. She is a natural beauty, with blonde hair and light features. Alice is young, bubbly and often comes off as naïve. The truth is that Alice is wise beyond her years. She is an intelligent girl who realizes how to use manipulation to her advantage. She finds reality boring and tries to make things more entertaining for herself often at the expense of others. Living alone has forced Alice to become extremely imaginative yet very lonely. Whenever she is visited she coaxes her visitors to stay as long as they can.
[ YOUNG CHARLES ]
Male. 8-12 yrs old. Young Charles is a dreamer. He is fair skinned and somewhat small for his age, but smart as a whip. He is imaginative and outspoken. Charles loves fairytales, especially “Alice in Wonderlandâ€. His parents, being rich aristocrats are rarely home, so he does not have much of a relationship with them at all. He is very close to his Nanny since she is his primary caregiver. She is the only person in the world he feels that cares for him and would do anything for her.
