Here’s an interesting one, it’s a grad film out of Columbia University in New York but it’s shooting in Vancouver so you’ve got a good shot at it — they’re not going to cast an actor from the US. The only way to submit is through Actors Access but it’s not that complicated — you need to set up a free account, look for “breakdowns” “vancouver” and then find the name of the project and submit yourself. If it’s a grad film that means that substantial time and money is going into the production, so the footage you get for your reel should be that much better. Grad films sometimes go on to be big award winners too, they’re the culmination of somebody’s years at film school so a lot goes into them. -Michael Bean, Owner+Head Coach, Biz Studio

Hard to say from the posting, but this one looks character driven and it’s focused around two young actors. They have nine days of shooting scheduled, a good proD opportunity. Make sure that you’ve considered the content before applying, and feel free to request a copy of the audition sides or of the script before consenting to go in for an audition. It doesn’t sound like they’re being gratuitously risqué, but if it was me I’d read the script first just to be sure. -Michael Bean, Owner+Head Coach, Biz Studio

COMMENTS: ECIAD Undergraduate GRAD Film – Trolls Vancouver based Writer/Director Brianne Nord-Stewart’s upcoming film, Trolls, is being produced by Vancouver’s Emily Carr University of Art and Design as part of the 2009 Undergraduate Grad class. Brianne has just returned from Australia where she made two short films at Melbourne’s Victoria College of the Arts Film and Television Program (VCA). The first film, Why I Bought a Bike, was very well received within the VCA community and at the 2008 Edmonton International Film Festival. The second film from VCA, Why I Fired My Secretary was completed at the beginning of November this year and will be submitted to a variety of international film festivals. Brianne’s short film debut, return, produced by ECIAD, was also an Official Selection at the 2007 Edmonton International Film Festival, and the 2007 Canadian Reel Femme Film Festival. Brianne’s experience in the industry is currently focused on narrative films. She has worked on commercial productions, and on documentaries. One of which is 4REAL, a television series (MTV2, National Geographic), which takes celebrity guests, including Flea (Red Hot Chili Peppers), Cameron Diaz, Joaquin Pheonix, and Casey Affleck, to countries around the world to connect them with community youth leaders who are creating REAL change. Trolls, will be shot on 16mm film or the RED ONE camera and finished on digital for preliminary distribution. The shoot is scheduled for three days between January 8th and 13th, 2009. The exact dates of shooting in the period have yet to be solidified. The final cut of the film will have professional colour grade, and a professional sound mix by established industry professionals. Post-production is scheduled to be complete by late April 2009. All participating cast and crew will receive a copy of the film for private reference only. After completion, Trolls will be submitted to a number of global film festivals.

This posting was sent to me by the director, he’s still looking for the leads for his ECIAD grad film. I didn’t know it was a grad film the last time I posted, that makes a difference because you know the time, experience and resources that go into this film are going to be substantially more than would go into a first-year project. It sounds like he’s open to changing the ethnicity in the script if he finds the right actors, it’s written as Korean but I have a hunch he’d be happy to work with whatever asian language the actors he hires speak. -Michael Bean, Owner+Head Coach, Biz Studio
