Okay folks, “stock photography” is all the rage in the advertising world right now. The way it works is that a photographer or studio will take 1000’s of pictures of everything they can think of, building a huge archive of “stock” photographs. So they’ll hire a group of teens for an afternoon and take a couple of hundred “high school” shots. They pay each of the teen “models” a couple of hundred dollars, and you sign a form giving the photo company the rights to use the photos for whatever advertising and promotion purposes they want. Then six months or a year or six years later when a company wants to make a print ad, they can either pay big bucks to set up a “high school” photo shoot specifically for their product, or they can use an inexpensive stock photo of some teens in a high school (you). You’ve already signed off on the pictures, so you get paid that one-time fee even if no one ever uses the pictures of you for an ad. By that same token, even if your picture gets used 1000 times for different ads, you don’t make any more money – you signed away your rights to the pictures at the photo shoot. So that’s how it works. It saves money for companies that are willing to use a “stock” photo instead of a custom one, and it provides some easy work for working and aspiring actors and models. An assistant from this photo company called me today about Friday’s audition. Don’t worry if you miss this one, it sounds like they’ll have another one in the fall. -Michael Bean, Head Coach, Biz Studio

There are some interesting peculiarities about this posting. “Open call” means that anyone can show up for the audition without scheduling in advance. It also means that you should be prepared to wait, sometimes LOTS of people show up for open call auditions. When it says that they’ll ask you to do a “cold read” for the audition it means that they’ll give you the script when you arrive, or sometimes when you walk into the audition room, and have you read it on camera with little or no preparation. The key with cold reading is to glance down for the line and then LOOK UP when you’re speaking and when the other characters are speaking. The camera always needs to see your eyes to know how you’re feeling, and feeling is what casting directors are looking for. -Michael Bean, Head Coach, Biz Studio

Another one from the Vancouver Film School – students in the film program at VFS make six short films and six documentary films over the course of 10 months, plus a series of “instructor shoots” which are essentially student films led by instructors. What that means is they’re casting every six weeks, and there are often roles for kids and teens. Sometimes they’ll post the auditions online, otherwise the only way to find out what they’re casting for is to stop by the production offices at 400 West Hastings Street in downtown Vancouver. -Michael Bean, Head Coach, Biz Studio
