I’m not sure how it works if you’re a Canadian citizen, most US productions won’t do the paperwork to hire you unless you book at a LARGE SUPPORTING or LEAD role in a film. If the show is vignette-based, they might be able to bring you down to do your thing on some kind of special deal, it’s at least worth the $2 to submit via Actors Access if you’ve got an amazing bizarre weird funny special skill that you’d like to show off on US television. Good luck! -Michael Bean, Head Coach, Biz Studio

I’m not sure why this one was posted to Actors Access, but since it’s there it’s fair game. There are a lot of kids in LA who’ll be submitted by their agent for this one, so only go to the extra effort of submitting yourself if you think you’re PERFECT for this role. If you are, they might be willing to do the paperwork to hire a Canadian, I know for a fact that they were looking at Canadian actors for the lead girl (Kevin Costner’s daughter) because I did some coaching for one of the girls who made the final directors reel. Good luck! -Michael Bean, Head Coach, Biz Studio

I don’t know much about the Surrey Little Theatre, but if you’re in that neighbourhood this is a great opportunity to connect with actors of different skill levels. If you do book the role in the play, send out invitations to local talent agents (i.e. Lloyd Talent has offices in Surrey) to come see you perform. I’ve met the fight director on this play, Nick Harrison, and he’s really good at what he does. Enjoy! -Michael Bean, Head Coach, Biz Studio

Here’s a great opportunity for an unrepresented actor to audition for the lead in a new Canadian TV series with a local casting director. This is the kind of “open call” audition that doesn’t happen very often, and it’s such a large role that this really is a potential “break out” role for a talented young performer. If you know anyone who’s appropriate for the role, pass this on! -Michael Bean, Head Coach, Biz Studio

Another wide-net search for just the right “mischievous, roguish, scrappy, and good looking” teen to play in a huge US feature film alongside academy-award nominated Abigail Breslin, the kid from “Little Miss Sunshine.” These are always a gamble because casting might receive up to 1000 tapes from around the continent. However, if you’re PERFECT for the role, go ahead and put yourself on tape and FedEx it down to LA, and do it quick because this was posted on June 18th and it says that auditions are this week only. The problem will be getting a copy of the “sides” for the audition, since they aren’t posted online anywhere. Agents HATE unsolicited phone calls and emails so don’t call and ask for an audition. Instead, if you’re really keen you should first submit on ActorsAccess.com, and if you don’t hear back within a day or two you should download a copy of the full script (see submissions), choose two contrasting scenes with Huck Finn in them, put those scenes on tape and FedEx it to LA double-quick along with a resume, headshot and your contact info. -Michael Bean, Head Coach, Biz Studio

Another US Feature seeking something so specific that they’re willing to receive taped auditions from around the continent. This time they’re looking for a age 18+ sweet young church-singer-turned-karaoke-addict to play age 17, and it sounds like it’s a big enough role that they’d be willing to do the paperwork to hire a Canadian. What’s unusual about this posting is that they’ve said that taped submissions are okay, so if you think you’ve got just the right sweet face and voice, go ahead and put yourself on tape for it. What that means is going to one of the websites mentioned under “submissions” and paying to download a copy of the “sides,” then putting those sides on tape in a “taped audition” either on your own or with an acting coach (we do that–www.bizstudio.ca). Remember to include a copy of your resume, headshot and contact information (classic rookie mistake) and send the whole package to the LA address below. Be aware that they’ll probably receive 1000 tapes, so don’t feel bad if you don’t hear anything back from them. Any audition is a gamble, and this one’s a big enough role that it’s probably worth the risk, as long as you think you’re perfect for it. -Michael Bean, Head Coach, Biz Studio

There’s considerably more work for Native actors in Vancouver now than there was a decade ago. A combination of historical pics that want to cast accurately, Canadian pictures needing Native actors, and Native filmmakers telling their own stories has created increase demand for Native actors. I’ve heard from local agents that they’re always scouting Native talent because there are auditions for those actors, regardless of their experience level. If you’re Native or can pass as Native on camera, consider sending out your info to agents right away. -Michael Bean, Head Coach, Biz Studio

Here’s another theatre gig, things have been slow in the online realm for independents and student film auditions for kids & teens. Real go-getters can always check in with the Vancouver Film School directly–they cast new projects every six weeks and occasionally needs young actors for films that don’t get posted anywhere online. I don’t know much about Footlight Theatre, but the lead role of “Annie” at least is a great opportunity for a young actor. If you do book this one, make sure to send postcards to agents and casting directors inviting them to come see your performance, and offer “comp” (i.e. free) tickets to the show if they decide to come. Enjoy! -Michael Bean, Head Coach, Biz Studio
