VFS has a punishing schedule for their students, so there are usually projects casting every couple of weeks. This one is reposted from the Vancouver Actors Guide website, and sometimes you’ll also find VFS films in the “talent/gigs” listings at Craigslist.org. Even though they’re asking for Korean boys, it’s more about look than about actual nationality. So if you look Korean-ish, you can probably still audition for this one. Hollywood does the same thing–they cast a Chinese actress in the lead role of “Memoirs of a Geisha” (very Japanese), for example. Have a good audition! -Michael Bean, Head Coach, Biz Studio

While Mija is visiting Canada, Hojun picks up a flower off the street by chance and that night the flower turns into an old man. The old man convinces Hojun to forgive his mother and father. Finally father and son meet with Mija to reconcile. This is a big one, reposted from the Actors Access website. This is the real deal–a big US feature film, looking for something so specific that they’re willing to accept submissions from far and wide. Probably they’re looking for a girl who’s a skilled actor and has a really specific ethnic look–the breakdown says “El Salvadoran Indian.” So you don’t have to be El Salvadoran Indian, you just have to LOOK like you could be. There’s a growing market for non-caucasian actors, and lucky you if you can fit into that demographic! The more flexible your look is, the more work there is for you. -Michael Bean, Head Coach, Biz Studio

Showfax and Actors Access have regular columns from casting directors in Los Angeles here, and they sometimes have excellent articles from guest casting directors. This one is from Lana Veekner, head of Portland, Oregon’s biggest casting company. I highly recommend reading her thoughts on the advantages of working in your hometown instead of moving to a bigger market like Los Angeles. You can read the whole article here.

Her main points are:

If you’re a strong actor, you can be a big fish in small pond.
In a small market (like Vancouver) really gifted actors stand out.

In a smaller market, it’s easier to meet the players.
After a year or two, especially if you’re good, most of the casting directors in town will know you on sight and know the kinds of roles they can bring you in for.

Quality of life: time to exercise, study, etc.
If you don’t have to spend all your time in a car commuting (Los Angeles), you can have a “life” in addition to having an acting career.

Join the unions.
Get your credits on local productions and join the union before you head south.

Theatre.
It’s easier to juggle theatre and film in a smaller city.

Independent films.
Connect with independent filmmakers, work on local films.

Do your own thing.
Take advantage of the smaller market to create your own films.

Save money for the move.
Waaaay less expensive to live in Vancouver than in LA, save your pennies here so you don’t have to work two jobs when you go down there to take your big shot.

Here’s an amazing chance to be in a US feature for the right small person. It looks like this film is shooting in the USA, so if they’re posting to the Vancouver section of Actors Access that means they’re having trouble finding just the right actor for the role. It also means they’ll probably get hundreds of submissions. Good luck! -Michael Bean, Head Coach, Biz Studio

STORYLINE: When she was young, Charlotte Stein’s parents decided to wait until she was old enough to understand religion to explain it to her. After her father’s passing, her mother starts to date a deacon from a catholic church and when he tells her that Jesus lives in her heart, there’s a slight misunderstanding. With the help of her best friend Albert, Charlotte has to try to find a way to save herself from the vampire living inside of her.

CHARLOTTE STEIN Female, Age 6-12. Charlotte is a smart and imaginative young girl, unexposed to the world of Religion. When she hears that Jesus is living in her heart, she is terrified. The prospect of someone living inside her horrifies her and she starts her research. Charlotte has a great vocabulary.

ALBERT Male, Age 6-12. Albert is Charlotte’s best friend. When Charlotte asks for his help, he springs into action. Also unexposed to catholocism, Albert has his own unique take on what’s happening to Charlotte. Albert is a smart, rather well off, sort of dorky young man who would do anything to help his friend.

Here’s a good one, reposted from the Vancouver Actors Guide. Great opportunity for three young actors to work on a semi-professional feature film shot here in BC. It’s a “thesis” film, which means that a group of film students is making the film as part of their Masters Degree at Columbia University. Masters Thesis films are usually much better than regular film-school fare, because the students have more experience (4-5 years) and because the budget is substantially higher for a thesis film, which means better equipment and locations (etc.) -Michael Bean, Head Coach, Biz Studio
